In the city centre of Sint-Niklaas, on the Grote Markt, the neo-Gothic town hall was renovated and extended. Next to the monument, a new building was cast with a structure in fair-faced concrete.
On the double-height ground floor there is the city shop with a reception area and counters. On an intermediate level, the city archives are 'suspended' as floating volumes, supported by a single column, shaping the space below. These volumes in themselves function as columns of the supporting structure.
The concrete structure takes heavy loads with high exentricities. The horizontal forces caused by this are transferred by means of the load distribution of the floors and the roofs; they are deployed here as flat horizontal beams.
