The Hotel Le Palace (renamed “DoubleTree by Hilton Brussels City”), located on Place Rogier in Brussels, along Boulevard du Jardin Botanique, is undergoing a major expansion. After 50 years and several attempts, one of the most important urban scars is finally being revamped. It introduces 149 additional hotel rooms, ground-floor commercial spaces, and a rooftop bar and restaurant, all integrated into a design that respects and reflects the surrounding architectural context. The extension consists of two structurally independent volumes, Building A and Building B. The key structural challenge lies in the presence of a metro tunnel beneath the southern part of the new construction, which limits foundation options and prohibits vertical loads in that area. To address this, UTIL designed a structural concept based on equilibrium: each building combines a cantilevered lightweight steel structure with a heavier concrete section acting as a counterweight. Building A, facing Rogier Square, features a cantilevered volume anchored to a concrete core that provides balance and lateral stability. Building B follows a similar structural strategy but also includes a column-free conference hall spanning 28 metres, made possible by a four-storey steel truss structure supported by concrete cores at each end..
