A new atelier space floats above an existing terraced house. The volume is suspended between the existing party walls, above the current roof, allowing the existing roofscape to remain undisturbed. The atelier is hung from a series of vertical UPN profiles anchored into the underlying structure of the party walls. The roof structure of the atelier comprises six different steel trusses. Each truss is fabricated from a steel plate, 5 to 6 mm thick, bent into a U-profile. Where necessary, the compression zones are reinforced with welded fins. The trusses are kept as slender as possible, with the timber roof framing acting as diagonal stiffeners.
