In Dilsen-Stokkem, De Gouden Liniaal is constructing a lookout tower made of rammed earth using sand, clay and gravel sourced from the surrounding area. The optimal composition of the locally produced rammed earth was precisely determined through testing by the French research centre CRATerre, specialists in the field. Based on this composition, an achievable compressive strength was derived, to which the design was subsequently adapted. Rammed earth is a traditional construction technique that has gained renewed interest in recent years due to its aesthetic and ecological advantages, with well-known examples by pioneer Martin Rauch and by architects Herzog & de Meuron.
