Puls architecten responds to the brief for the extension of the “De Dageraad” school complex in Kortessem with a clear and legible layout and plan organization, which in turn calls for a simple and logical structural system. Depending on use and spatial organization, the structure applied is the one that offers the most rational solution. Workshops are accommodated in a separate volume with a conventional steel structure. Such a lightweight system allows for efficient assembly and limits loads on the foundations. Classrooms are constructed using masonry walls and prestressed hollow-core slabs. Within the same volume, the administration areas and the multipurpose space—which require larger spans—are built using TT beams supported by four concrete shear walls. The structural system generally spans parallel to the longitudinal façades, minimizing structural depth at these elevations and allowing space for generous window openings.
