‘Muziektheater Transparant’, together with the theatres ‘Laika’ and ‘The Roovers’, now share a former warehouse in Borgerhout that has been transformed into a theatre. The building consists of three structural parts. The administrative offices are located on the street side. In this section, the existing steel framework was renovated and reinforced. The existing steel beams (IPN180) were no longer sufficient for the new program and its corresponding loads. They were transformed into tensioned beams by adding steel elements. The existing steel profiles serving as columns were also inadequate and were reinforced along their weak axis by welding T-shaped profiles onto them, a reinterpretation of the transverse column. In the central zone of the building are the new vertical circulation and a large terrace. At the rear of the building, the stacked theatre halls have been installed. They are enclosed within a large concrete “box,” which is structurally and acoustically completely separated from the rest of the building and its existing façades. The floor slabs are made of prestressed concrete hollow-core elements resting on precast concrete walls. This section has its own separate foundation on piles.
