The “folded” steel roof defines the space of the dining area. To make the structure both constructible and transportable, the roof was divided into twelve strips, which were bolted together on site. The roof rests on eleven columns and leans against the rear solid concrete structure, making wind bracing unnecessary. The columns are each positioned at the lowest kink in the roof valleys. At the front, three exterior columns were omitted, creating a canopy in that area. Omitting these columns required a fundamental redesign of the structural system. The roof was conceived as a set of full and half inverted umbrellas but behaves as a series of bent beams in the cantilevered zones. Each of the twelve strips is composed of welded triangles of perforated steel plate, with upstanding ribs along the edges. These ribs provide additional stiffness.
