De Peerle is a care complex in Duffel that combines several different programs, each with its own spatial requirements and resulting structural logic. When these programs are stacked, the challenge is to align the structural rhythms. The ground floor houses open functions, including a day care center. The two upper floors accommodate 54 assisted living units, which require a smaller scale. An underground parking facility is provided. At De Peerle, the loads above the ground floor are redistributed by a thick concrete slab to columns aligned with the structural rhythm of the parking level. This allowed the architect not to adapt the layout of the assisted units to the strict structural grid of the underlying floors.
